Talk about travel nightmares. After suffering from technical failures, passengers of an Air France flight from Paris to Shanghai had to endure the legendary Siberian cold when their plane made an emergency landing in Irkutsk on Sunday. Now they are stuck in a Siberian hotel for three days.
Having no Russian visas, the stranded passengers must consistently be accompanied by police and are not allowed to leave hotel premises. The passengers are also stuck in the hotel because their clothing is inadequate for the biting Siberian frost.
Air France Boeing 777 from Paris to Shanghai was forced to divert to Irkutsk, Russia after an acrid smell and light smoke appeared on board. The airline said that none of the passengers had been hurt and all were provided with rooms in a hotel near to the airport.
On Monday, Air France sent a plane from Paris to take passengers the rest of the way to Shanghai. However, that plane also ended up being grounded at the Irkutsk airport due to a technical issue.
Both planes are Boeing 777s with 14 years of flight miles.
Air France was then forced to send a third plane from Paris to Irkutsk. It is currently flying over the Baltic Sea.
