Amazon’s cashier-less grocery store is headed to San Francisco’s Financial District. Building permits issued for 300 California Street, which is just blocks away from the Transamerica Building have been approved and “Amazon Go” signs have already been installed outside the building.
As described on Amazon’s website, Amazon Go is said to be “a new kind of store with no checkout required.”
“We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology so you never have to wait in line. With our Just Walk Out Shopping experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout.”
There are already five Amazon Go stores in operation in Seattle and Chicago, and it seems all shoppers have to do is scan their phone app at the door, purchase their desired items and then leave.
This could very well be the future of retail as smartphone apps take the place of the familiar rows of cashiers and registers. No checkout required as shoppers use an app to enter the store. Cameras and other sensors monitor the items shoppers take, which are then charged to their Amazon account.
Amazon is increasing its strategy for its retail business, especially after acquiring Whole Foods and venturing into the food industry, in an effort to compete with leading grocery retailers like Walmart, Target and Costco.
