“Aquaman” Closes Out 2018 With A Big Splash

Among the various 2018 Christmas Day movie releases, “Aquaman” led a top five that was the same as last weekend. The aquatic superhero, played by Jason Momoa, brought in an estimated $52 million to its domestic ticket sales — down less than 24 percent from its opening weekend.

The movie made nearly $189 million in North America for Warner Bros., and is currently approaching $750 million worldwide — surpassing “Justice League” and “Suicide Squad” to become the third-highest grossing movie within the DC Extended Universe. These numbers also put “Aquaman” just $72 million behind Wonder Woman’s worldwide haul of $821 million, a movie that was considered to be an immense hit for Warner Bros.

“Aquaman” shows that despite mixed reviews from critics as well as a domestic box office, the movie can still be considered a win for Warner Bros. and proves that it is still a popular movie among audiences.

In comparison, rounding out the top five were Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” which grew 19 percent to approach $100 million in domestic ticket sales. Paramount’s “Bumblebee” was down just 5 percent; Sony’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was up 11 percent to more than $100 million; and Warner Bros.’ “The Mule” went up 24 percent.
