The status of Ben Affleck’s role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming solo Batman movie remains in question. There have already been rumors swirling around for some time that Affleck wouldn’t be returning as Batman, a character he’s portrayed in three movies so far: “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” and “Justice League.”
“The Batman” writer/director Matt Reeves, known for “War for the Planet of the Apes,” turned in the first act of his screenplay, and it reportedly features a young version of the character, which means Affleck would likely not be returning to Gotham City, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Affleck is considered too old to play a young take on Batman. The movies he’s starred in so far have portrayed him as an older, worn-out Batman who has been operating for many years. However, if Affleck were to take on the role of The Dark Knight again, it’s possible that the movie could just feature flashbacks of a young Bruce Wayne.
After a series of failures, Warner Bros. is moving away from its shared cinematic universe of DC Comics properties to focus on standalone stories. “Wonder Woman” proved to be a huge success, so it’s no coincidence that it was largely removed from that broader universe. The sequel, “Wonder Woman 1984,” will likely follow suit, as will Warner Bros. upcoming film, “Aquaman.” With this move in mind, it suggests that Affleck’s take on Batman no longer fits into Warner Bros.’ plans.
