If there’s ever a time to know about K-pop it’s now because South Korean boy band BTS has been making waves in the U.S. since making history as the first K-pop group to perform at the American Music Awards.
The Korean septet has gone on to break multiple records this year with their historic Love Yourself series, the latest of which came out on Aug. 24. The release of “Love Yourself: Answer” sparked an outpouring of support from fans and audiences across the globe, including some prominent celebrities.
Label mate Liam Payne, whose First Time EP was released on the same date, expressed pride in the group’s success, tweeting: “Super proud of @BTS_twt I told my label about them a while ago it’s a pleasure to release the same time great music boys well done.”
James Corden invited the group back to his show to perform on The Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke segment.
Tyra Banks also reached out to reunite with BTS, whom with she hung out with at the BBMAs in May, writing “Just heard those fierce boys of @BTS_twt will be in LA next week…so am I. Reunion? #TyTyLovesBTS.”
BTS has proven that K-pop can thrive in America. The group even reached a feat no other K-pop artists had ever reached: their album, “Love Yourself: Tear,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Despite Western audiences’ previous resistance to K-pop, BTS has proved that with a loyal fan base, killer moves and catchy tunes, even American audiences and celebrities can become K-pop fans.
