Making a cameo in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” gave Cher a taste for the music of ABBA, and now she’s back to fill our ears with more of their music. The singer and actor is releasing an album that will feature cover versions of the Swedish pop group’s hits. She will also be going on tour to promote the new album.
Cher claimed the idea to make a cover album came to her after she performed the song “Fernando” for the July 2018 movie sequel.
“I did ‘Fernando’ and then I did the opening to ‘Super Trouper’,” Cher said in an interview with Reuters Television. “Somehow, it came from that…I was going to go off on vacation and I just thought that might be a cool thing to do.”
Titled “Dancing Queen” in reference to the pop band’s 1976 hit, the album will be released next week and features Cher’s interpretations of 10 of the band’s songs, including “SOS,” “Waterloo” and “Mamma Mia.”
Cher will also feature an emotional take on the Swedish pop group’s 1981 single “One of Us” on the album. In the song, Cher strips away much of the tropical production on the original to bring forth the heaviness and dark lyrical content.
The original song appeared on ABBA’s final album, “The Visitor,” and was heavily influenced by the divorces of the two couples in the quartet.
“Dancing Queen” is Cher’s 26th studio album and features production from Mark Taylor, who worked with her on the hit “Believe.” Cher is also co-producing a musical based on her 50 years in show business, which have been marked by multiple comebacks. The show is said to open on Broadway in December.
