Last week we lost Sugar Joans, a singer that her coach Pharrell had consistently fought for. Now that the top 10 singers have been selected, we can only hope that the performances will prove the remaining contestants deserving of their victories thus far.
This show introduced some new advisers for this week’s round — Christina Aguilera, Diana Ross, Colbie Caillat and Patrick Stump. Needless to say it was a little strange, yet refreshing to welcome Christina back to The Voice. Christina worked with Team Gwen, which perhaps dispelled any rumors that Christina’s return to the show next year was meant to undercut Gwen. There’s no fighting between those blondes … they’re all about girl power!
As with all episodes, some performances weren’t anything special, while others took the spotlight. Here were the top 3 of the night.
Top 3 performances
Craig Wayne Boyd
Even if you aren’t a country music, there’s no denying that Craig Wayne Boyd is genuinely gifted. No matter what he sings, he’s able to connect with the song’s emotion and with the audience. Performing Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line,” Craig made the song his own. Week after week, Craig blows each performance out of the water. He’s certainly reliable and talented — he may go all the way to the end.
DaNica Shirey
Another singer who has performed solidly week after week, DaNica Shirey sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” But before she walked onstage, DaNica had an emotional interaction with Clive Davis, who discovered Whitney Houston. She felt so honored to be able to sing the song in front of him, and even Clive Davis noted how vulnerable she sounded. During the performance tonight, DaNica absolutely killed it. She sings with patience, strength and ease. Adam noted that Tessanne Chin, a previous winner of The Voice had performed that song as well, and that they both did an excellent job. DaNica Shirey, another fierce contender.
Chris Jamison
Lastly but certainly not least, we have Chris Jamison, who has been a coach and fan favorite throughout the season. While Chris hasn’t been perfectly consistent (most of this year’s performers haven’t either), he’s definitely stood out due to his stage presence, falsetto and — we’ll say it — adorable quality. This week, Adam thought Chris should perform a newer song, one that not many people are familiar with, but is certain to rise in the charts. Singing “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, Chris did a great job engaging with the crowd, dancing along to the music and hitting the song’s notes. His range wasn’t showcased in this performance as well as in previous weeks, but it’s gotten to the point of the season where presenting personality is almost as important as vocals. If you didn’t see it before, Chris Jamison has some funk in him.
At this point, it isn’t clear who the frontrunners are, but it’s obvious that consistency is key. Ultimately consistency will set apart great singers from the wining singer of the season. For now, it’s mostly about song choice and shock value. It’s time for the singers to step up their game before it’s too late.
