Since 1982, Disney has owned the Thanksgiving box office, and for the 12th time, the studios made their holiday stretch as their sequel “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is projected to hit a five-day of $70M. This number far exceeds the previous five-day of 2012’s “Wreck-It Ralph.” Disney expects “Ralph Breaks the Internet” to come in around the high $60Ms range.
Fandango reported that “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is outpacing advance ticket sales of Disney’s previous two Thanksgiving launches at this point in time, Coco ($72.9M)and Moana ($82M).
Early reactions for the sequel were largely positive.
Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is centered on the titular Ralph who literally goes around breaking the Internet. It’s a huge departure from the first Wreck-It Ralph, whose events all took place in a classic arcade setting. The departure from the old school way of gaming was something that directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston thought felt right for the sequel.
“Themes have changed, that’s always been at the front of our mind,” Johnston told ComicBook.com. “And Ralph being a guy who has a life that he really likes, so the idea that something would come in and invade his world that would force a change really. That ends up being the steering wheel breaking but the actual change in the Internet. And it’s constantly changing and constantly evolving, and for a guy like Ralph who is more of a sort of homebody if you will. Something like that would create a ton of conflict beyond being a big expansive universe.”
