Google is ready to get back into tablets, but this time, the Pixel tablet will have a high-end detachable meant to rival the iPad Pro and Surface Pro. The new Google Pixel Slate will run Chrome OS, which has been tinkered with over the past few years to work better on tablets.
The Pixel Slate is not the first Chrome OS tablet, but it will be the first one that can actually compete with the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro.
The Pixel Slate starts at $599 and runs up to $1,699. Consumers will need to pay extra for a keyboard, the Pixel Slate Keyboard. The tablet also supports the Pixelbook Pen.
This may seem like a lot of money to pay for a tablet, but the Pixel Slate is more expensive than most tablets because it essentially has the insides of a computer, including an Intel processor.
The tablet contains 8th Gen Intel processors on the inside that can go up to a Core i7 paired with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The tablet also has front-firing stereo speakers, 8-megapixel front and rear cameras, and a 12.3-inch screen that Google says is faster and more efficient than a traditional LCD.
More than the, the Pixel Slate includes a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, which is a first for a Chromebook.
This is Google’s second attempt at making a Pixel-branded tablet. Last time, the Pixel C, also a detachable meant to be paired with a keyboard cover, ran on Android. As a result, Android never excelled on tablets due to a lack of optimized apps.
