On Nov. 12 the Beyond Burger, a soy-free, gluten-free vegan patty that “changes color as you cook it,” hit the shelves at the UK’s largest supermarket chain Tesco. The vegan patty, which is just like a traditional beef patty, has already been sold out in the U.S., and is now causing huge excitement among UK vegetarians and vegans.
The product was stocked in the chilled meat aisle alongside conventional fresh meat in more than 350 branches of Tesco.
The burger is the brainchild of California-based vegan protein brand Beyond Meat. The Beyond Burger is made completely from plants, unlike “lab-grown” meats, and contains 20 g of pea protein, potato starch and coconut oil. The company stated that they added beet juice to the product to give it “a red-meat appearance.”
With the company’s new move in the UK, the brand hopes the Beyond Burger will “help people on their journey to eating more plant-based by allowing them to purchase plant-based foods in the section of the store where they are already purchasing other forms of protein.”
“Our goal in creating The Beyond Burger was to provide the full 360° mouth-watering, juicy, and delicious experience of beef but without so many of the health, environmental, and animal welfare downsides of traditional animal-based meat,” the company says on its website.
The Beyond Burger will cost £5.50 for a pack of two.
