Red carpets may have a reputation for being exclusive, glamorous affairs, but when Jason Momoa is involved, fans know that they’re going to get a fun, down to earth experience. Wednesday, Dec. 12, marked the premiere of “Aquaman” in Los Angeles, and rather than just a simple, pose-for-photos-and-say-hi-to-fans type affair, Jason Momoa stripped down to his vest to lead a traditional Māori dance called the haka.
The dance routine included his two children and New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison, who plays his father in the movie and has Māori ancestors.
The performance lasted over two minutes, and involved the Hawaiian actor smashing his golden trident in half over his knee.
“Ka Mate” was originally written by Māori war leader Te Rauparaha to celebrate his escape from pursuing enemies. The dance has since been popularized across the globe by the New Zealand rugby team the All Blacks, who perform it before their matches.
In addition to his epic performance, Momoa couldn’t keep his hands off of wife Lisa Bonet at the premiere. At the TCL Chinese Theatre, Momoa, 39, leaned in for a smooch with Bonet, 51, as the cameras flashed.
Aside from his wife and daughter Lola Iolani and son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, Momoa’s mother, Coni Momoa, was also in attendance.
