Kanye West went on “TMZ Live” and told the TMZ newsroom why he believes slavery is a choice and why he decided to sport his ‘Make America Great Again’ red hat. Kanye appeared on the show with Candace Owens where they explained “free thought” and how it can make the world a better place.
During the conversation Kanye said, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice.”
West has since faced a lot of backlash and his words caused Twitter to catch fire. In his own series of Tweets, West tried to explain his statement:
“To make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved.”
“The reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can’t be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought. It was just an idea. Once again I am being attacked for presenting new ideas,” West went on to say.
The Internet was still not happy and West still faced much criticism. As a result, the rapper apologized Wednesday on a Chicago radio station for calling slavery a “choice,” and broke down on the air over an old friend.
“I don’t know if I properly apologized for how that slave comment made people feel, so I want to take this moment right now to say that I’m sorry for hurting, I’m sorry for the one-two effect of the MAGA hat into the slave comment,” West told 107.5 WGCI radio in his hometown.
“And I’m sorry for people who felt let down by that moment, and also I appreciate you guys giving me the opportunity to talk to you about the way I was thinking and what I was going through and what led me to that,” West said.
