Monopoly For Millennials Is Here, But Facing Criticism

As if adulting wasn’t hard enough already, the classic game of Monopoly is here to remind millennials exactly how hard life is, especially for them.

“Monopoly for Millennials” — the recently released version of the classic board game — centers around the often-mocked generation of people born between 1981 and 1996. The cover features the”Monopoly” icon Rich Uncle Pennybags with a cup of coffee, earbuds and a medal labeled “participation.” Catering even more to millennials, the tagline on the cover reads: “Forget real estate. You can’t afford it anyway.”

According to the game’s description, “Money doesn’t always buy a great time, but experiences, whether they’re good — or weird — last forever.” In other words, this new version of monopoly isn’t about collecting cash and real estate, but about collecting experiences such as dining at a vegan bistro or doing a meditation retreat.

While plenty of people seem able to handle the price of the game — which is $19.82 — the game has drawn mixed reactions. Many millennials shared that they are offended while others found it hilarious and jeered at any negative reaction as a classic millennial reaction.

Despite the backlash, Hasbro stood by its decision to make the game, and according to a statement given to Fortune, “We created Monopoly for Millennials to provide fans with a lighthearted game that allows Millennials to take a break from real life and laugh at the relatable experiences and labels that can sometimes be placed on them … Whether you are a lifestyle vlogger, emoji lover or you make your ‘side hustle’ selling vegan candles, Monopoly for Millennials is for you!”
