Naomi Osaka Becomes Asia’s First No. 1 In Tennis

Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka is the youngest woman to make her debut at No. 1 in nine years and the person from Asia to lead the tennis rankings. The 21-year-old from Japan, who has won the last two Grand Slams, is the first singles player from Asia to top the tennis rankings on either the men’s or women’s tour.

Osaka earned her first Grand Slam title last September at the U.S. Open and went into the season-opening Grand Slam in Melbourne as world No. 4. She moved up to top the rankings after beating Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the final.

Osaka is also the first woman to win successive majors since Williams in 2015 and the youngest since Martina Hingis in 1998.

“I’m beyond excited to become the new WTA World No. 1,” Osaka said. “I’ve always dreamt of being in this position and I am honored to be part of the elite group of players who have reached the No. 1 ranking.”

Osaka was born in Osaka and raised in the United States by her Japanese mother and Haitian father, Osaka. She also has an older sister named Mari.

The news of Osaka’s ascension to world No. 1 brought a wave of celebration in Nemuro, Hokkaido, the northern Japan city where her mother grew up.
