South Park has always been irreverent if nothing else. Not just of cultural norms and controversial topics, but of business practices. Matt and Trey Parker tend to operate on so many levels of irony and sarcasm, it’s kind of hard to tell when they’re being serious about something. The latest head-scratcher comes to us in the form of the new trailer for season 22 of South Park.
The trailer is only a few seconds long and features no characters. It’s comprised of three narrated text slides that read the following: “America has reached a crossroads. What will we do next? #cancelsouthpark. (All new episodes air every Wednesday!)”
This is a puzzler. There are two dominating fan theories at the moment. Some believe this is an actual plea on the part of the creators to end the show before it goes the way of The Simpsons. Others think this is a hint to the theme of the season, specifically a hit on the recent controversies of actors and shows being persecuted for things they did years ago. It’s anyone’s guess what the game plan is, but it’s safe to assume that no matter what it is, it’ll be quite a spectacle.
