Do you love taking selfies? Well, before you take your next selfie, beware because one doctor in San Francisco says that this now-common pastime has been bringing about a silent health problem that is selfie wrist.
Dr. Levi Harrison says that selfie wrist is a form of carpal tunnel syndrome, and says that he has been seeing a lot of patients with the condition. Those suffering from “selfie wrist” might experience numbness, tingling, or a sharp pain in their wrist, which comes from the nerves become inflamed due to hyper flexing the wrist inward to angle the phone’s camera. The doctor also claims that people can selfie writ from holding the phone for too long without moving.
Factors like injuries to the wrist joint, an overactive pituitary gland, an inactive ductless gland, autoimmune disorder, and work stress to the wrist joint are common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.
More than just pain in the wrist, selfie-related deaths have also been recorded in recent years, after several people lost their lives in an attempt to take a selfie. As a result, consultants have begun to teach the general public on the hidden hazards of taking a selfie. The Internal Ministry of Russia even discharged a “Safe Selfie Guide” to teach the general public about safe ways to take a selfie.
