Zozibini Tunzi crowned Miss Universe 2019
South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi has crowned Miss Universe on Sunday, beating out more than 90 women from across the world at the pageant which was held in Atlanta, GA. Runners up for the tiara included Puerto Rico’s Madison Anderson and Mexico’s Sofia Aragon.
As per tradition, finalists in the competition were asked a range of questions on topics such as climate change, protest, and social media. In her final question, 26-year-old Zozibini was asked what we should be teaching young girls today, and she answered leadership.
“It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time—not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labeled women to be,” Tunzi said.
She went on to say that women are the most powerful beings in the world and that she should be given every opportunity. Zozibini is the first black woman to win the competition since Leila Lopes in 2011.
After winning the competition and taking the time to reflect, Tunzi posted on social media saying how grateful she was. She further wrote how she hopes “every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams.” Tunzi even got a shout-out from Oprah Winfrey on Twitter for her win.
