Cats are seemingly taking over Tonawanda Island in New York. Currently, locals estimate there are hundreds of abandoned cats, making the feline count higher than the seasonal human population. The cats are reproducing at a rapid rate. The unwanted pets are left to wander around the 85-acre island on their own and get into whatever they want. Many felines spend their days hiding, then come out at night. Wayne Howard who lives in North Tonawanda remarked “The messes that they make, especially the feces around the island and where people walk, it’s disgusting. I’ve caught them on my boat a few times and they made messes; they’re just a problem.” A woman named Danielle Coogan is trying to solve the issue with a campaign she calls ‘Operation Island Cats.’. Coogan wants to spay and neuter the animals one at a time. As part of the operation, the cats also get vaccinated. The kittens will be put up for adoption, but the adult felines can spend the rest of their days on the island, but won’t be able to reproduce.
