The CW’s long-standing show has been to hell and back — literally — and it appears that Season 14 of “Supernatural” is bringing its biggest change yet: the multiple episode disappearance of one Winchester brother.
Spoiler alert: at the end of Season 13, fans saw Dean’s body become the vessel of Michael the archangel. While the actor Jesen Ackles may be on screen, he won’t be playing Dean; fans will actually be seeing Michael.
The show has always been about the relationship between Sam and Dean Winchester. While it’ll be interesting and fun to see Ackles portray a new character, fans are still devastated that they won’t be seeing much of the quick-witted charmer that is Dean Winchester for a better part of the season.
In fact, co-show runner Andrew Dabb shared that it was quite difficult writing the show without Dean.
“It’s challenging to write episodes without Dean Winchester in them, because he is such a fundamental part of the show. But it’s also exciting [for] Jensen and us [to have] the opportunity to play around with this new character,” Dabb said. “It gives some other characters a bit of breathing room in terms of Castiel and Jack, and Mary and Bobby.”
Dabb also talked about how Sam and Dean Winchester are the pillars of the show.
“The show’s built upon two pillars, and those two pillars are Sam and Dean,” Dabb told TVLine. “We’ve taken Sam away for little chunks of time here and there, but never in a huge way. He’s been soulless and things like that, but he’s still kind of present. Demon Dean was kind of a one-episode thing, and largely, the action happened off-screen.”
Ackles change in character isn’t the only big change that’s coming to the show. It was previously reported that Season 14 wouldn’t be as long as other seasons. It was confirmed that the forthcoming season would air only 20 episodes, which is three episodes less than the show’s normal 23-episode run.
“ Supernatural” returns to the CW on Oct. 11 so make sure to catch the season premiere!
