The Puppeteer Behind Big Bird And Oscar The Grouch Retires

It’s a sad day for those who grew up learning their numbers, colors and the alphabet on “Sesame Street” because an original beloved performer is stepping down to retire.

Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who has played Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on “Sesame Street,” is retiring after nearly 50 years on the show.

In an interview with the New York Times, the 84-year-old revealed that Thursday would be his last day on the program, which he joined from the start in 1969.

Spinney said, “I always thought, how fortunate for me that I got to play the two best Muppets?”

“Playing Big Bird is one of the most joyous things of my life,” Spinney added.

Spinney is retiring because he said the physical requirements of performing the characters had become difficult. He also began to develop problems with his balance. He actually stopped doing the puppeteering for Big Bird in 2015 and has since only provided the voices for him and Oscar.

Once Spinney officially steps down, his apprentice, Matt Vogel, will succeed him in the Big Bird role. Vogel is known for performing as Kermit the Frog since 2017.

Mr. Caroll Spinney, you and your work will surely be missed. Happy retirement!
