This Classic Living Statue Act Is Coin-Operated

It could just be because I don’t live in an area with high tourism, but I haven’t seen a living statue act in a long time. It’s one of the most impressive (if perhaps mildly unsettling) busking tricks in modern history, and I can’t help but be awed by the sheer dedication and showmanship it requires.

This gold-plated gentleman in Barcelona went the extra mile, going from living statue to coin-operated animatronic. I have to wonder how many tons of hair gel, glue, and gold paint this guy requires to maintain his illusion on a daily basis.

Not to mention the knowledge to make quick, precise movements that can be entertaining without damaging his costume. This guy must have a veritable playbook of bits and dance moves, each one ready to bust out the moment a coin dings into the cup. It’s a tough job, but he does it with gusto and a smile.
