When Aquaman costumes hit Halloween stores around the country this year, they will lean into the classic orange-and-green look of Arthur Curry’s classic DC Comics suit, according to a leaked image that appeared on Reddit. The costumes will likely come from Rubie’s, a popular retailer whose seasonal costume inventory has already started circulating online.
Although the green and orange look may not be Aquaman’s primary color scheme in the DC movies, it will help Warner Bros. when using it for licensing and merchandising.
Aquaman’s costume palette will avoid a pitfall that Disney fell into shortly after the release of “Moana” where a Halloween costume that featured Maui as a bare chest with brown skin and tattoos from the film was accused of cultural appropriation.
Jason Momoa has repeatedly discussed the cultural significance of the tattoos his character wears in Aquaman. Had the Halloween costume embraced Momoa’s bare-chested tattoo look, it’s likely that a similar controversy could have erupted.
Directed by James Wan, “Aquaman” stars Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Ludi Lin as Captain Murk, and Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry.
“Aquaman” will be released in the U.S. on Dec. 21.
Will you be dressing up as Aquaman this Halloween season?
