This Philosopher’s Mummified Head Is The Stuff Of Nightmares

Just in time for Halloween, right? The eccentric English philosopher Jeremy Bentham is back to haunt onlookers with his mummified head. Students, and the public alike, snapped photos of this gaunt display at University College London this week. You might be wondering why the founder of modern utilitarianism is on display, long after his death in 1832.

Bentham wanted to contribute to science and felt that his mummified head was his own way of doing just that. He also requested his body be dissected in a public setting, and his skeleton be pieced back together. Pretty wild and slightly progressive for this philosopher; anything in the name of science!

Straight from the mummy’s mouth, “the question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?” Great question to ponder as you stare into the eyes of this creepy corpse!
