If you thought legroom on in your economy seat was rough, wait until airlines start using standing seats! Could standing seats really be the newest budget flight option? We sure hope not. The idea of standing up during a long flight is agonizing, but it could save you some money!
“Ultra-high density” seating could make its way onto planes thanks to Italian seat manufacturer Aviointeriors. The company recently release the prototypes for their “Skyrider” seat designs that feature partially stand-up seating at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Germany. Granted, you aren’t entirely upright, but you’re not entirely seated, either. It would be a great way for airplanes to consolidate more space for more passengers, but is a stand-up seat really worth it? Flying should be about the experience, not treated like a cattle call.
With that being said, the whole premise behind these seats is the idea that it’s just like riding horseback. The company points to the fact that cowboys could ride horses comfortably for hours. Being that this isn’t the countryside nor is the Wild West, that argument may not win any customers. The seats also decrease legroom by 23 inches. But, the seats could increase the amount of passengers aboard a flight by 20%. So, it’s all just business as usual.
