The contentious history between fans of PC gaming and fans of console gaming usually circles back to one, vital point in favor of the keyboard-loving crowd: modding. Unlike console games, you can tweak your computer game to do cool things. Fun things. Weird things.
Such is the case with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a game that already seizes weird by the blowhole of a giant, flying, helicopter-eating whale that’s on fire (a real thing in Phantom Pain). Code-savvy gamers have descended on Metal Gear with unexpected vigor, and one such effort is the product of pure, real-life magic.
First, a little context. There’s a puppy in The Phantom Pain. It’s adorable. You rescue him from a war zone and he eventually grows up to be a really useful ally in your fight against Bad Guys. But before all that happens, he’s just a puppy hanging out at home base while your buddy, Revolver Ocelot (that’s his name, don’t worry), trains him.
When Revolver and the puppy — his name is D-Dog, short for Diamond Dog, which is also the name of your private army (seriously, it’s cool, games gonna game) — meet you at base for the first time, this happens:
And this:
It’s freaking adorable.
Keep those images in mind. They become a twisted nightmare scene when you swap the model for the dog out with Revolver himself. He’s a much larger virtual object than the puppy was, so only part of his body is visible.
There’s also no “dog” animation programmed for Revolver, since he’s not actually a four-legged creature. That means he’s stuck in a “t-pose” position, save for some… basic, one might even say instinctual, movements.
This is too much.
