New Super Food Trend: Cockroach Milk

There have been alternative dairy products that derive from sources such as nuts and fruits, this alternative milk is harvested from cockroaches.

A study conducted in 2016 shows that the Pacific beetle can produce ‘milk’ that has more nutritional value than dairy milk, full of protein and amino acids. The study shows the substance, “is estimated to contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of dairy milk.”

This can also serve as a substitute for dairy-based milk for people who are lactose intolerant or have dairy allergies. The only problem being that cockroaches can’t be milked like mammals, requiring genetic engineering to produce the fluid.

The cockroach milk is in crystal form in the brood sack of the Pacific beetle cockroach that is high in fats, sugars and proteins. Scientists are working on collecting the crystals, to create a viable milk alternative for human consumption.

A South African company, Gourmet Grubb, that created insect milk or entomilk with claims of using ‘sustainable farmed insects.’ Gourment Grubb also claims that that this form of milking is environmentally sustainable.

The taste of the cockroach milk is reported to taste the same as cow’s milk, also offering another healthy option that can help during food shortages. Check out the video above for more on cockroach milk.
