Is Mr. Peanut Actually Dead?

The iconic Mr. Peanut mascot was killed off ahead of the Super Bowl

Mr. Peanut, the fictional spokesperson for Planter’s Peanuts, “died doing what he did best—having people’s backs when they needed him most,” according to the verified Twitter account for “The Estate of Mr. Peanut.”

In a series of unfortunate events, Mr. Peanut was driving his NUTmobile with friends Matt Walsh and Wesley Snipes when an armadillo walked into the road, causing Mr. Peanut to swerve and drive off of a canyon. Although the three were able to catch hold of a branch, the weight was not able to sustain all three of them, and the branch began to break.

Taking matters into his own hands, Mr. Peanut dipped his hat to his friends and decided to sacrifice himself by letting go. In a dramatic end scene, Mr. Peanut falls to his death and the NUTmobile explodes.

Mr. Peanut was 104.

Planters said that fans can watch Mr. Peanut’s funeral by tuning in during the third quarter of the Super Bowl to “celebrate” the famous monocle-wearing legume.

Although some fans were pretty salty about the turn of events, others are expressing their grief through comedy. Some expressed confusion about the unexpected demise of an age-old icon while others are cracking jokes on social media.

Either way, the legume-based mascot went down a legend.
