Shark attacking seal turns San Francisco Bay into a blood bath

A group of tourists were equally amazed and horrified on Saturday when a shark was seen preying on a seal next to the Alcatraz Island dock in San Francisco Bay.

Out of nowhere, a seal breaches the water’s surface, and is quickly devoured by the shark, leaving the bay bloody and red. Tourists on the dock ran over to the railing to check out the action once they realize what happened.

“Holy crud!,” one boy said in a video filmed from the dock, followed by his best rendition of the Jaws theme song. “That’s the awesomest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!”

According to a press release from Shark Stewards, a shark conservation nonprofit, the incident took place at about noon, and the shark appears to be an 8 to 10-foot great white shark.

David McGuire, director of Shark Stewards and Research Associate and the California Academy of Sciences, said that, “This is the first recorded predation event by a white shark I’m aware of in the San Francisco Bay.” Although that definitely doesn’t mean that sharks haven’t preyed on seals in the bay before.

The release also states that “although there is no record of an attack on humans by a white shark inside the bay, great white sharks have been observed inside the Bay on several occasions.
