Netflix recently announced a new scripted bio-series about the late Grammy-winner Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. The series is currently being called “Selena: The Series,” and is being described as a coming of age story that follows Selena as her dreams come true and all the heart-wrenching and life-changing choices she and her family had to make as they navigate success, family, and music.
For those who may not remember, Selena is the singer behind hit songs like “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “Dreaming of You.” She is considered one of the biggest Mexican stars, but sadly her life was cut short in 1995 at age 23 when the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar, murdered her.
“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said in a statement. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives.”
This won’t be the first time Selena’s story has been adapted for the screen. Jennifer Lopez played Selena in the 1997 biopic film “Selena.”
For the Netflix series, the script will be written and executive produced by Moisés Zamora, along with Campanario Entertainment president Jaime Davila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Simran A. Singh.
Currently, there is no news on casting or a release date for “Selena: The Series.”
