Breaking Out From YouTube To Late Night TV
After the “Last Call with Carson Daly” spot was dropped from NBC in September because Carson Daly decided to step away from his 1:30 a.m. slot, YouTube star Lilly Singh will debut a new late night show called “A Little Late with Lilly Singh.”
Although Samantha Bee and Busy Philipps both host their own late night shows, Singh will be the only woman to host a show on one of the big four networks in 30 years. Joan Rivers hosted “The Late Show on Fox” for two years starting in 1986.
The Indian-Canadian entertainer’s show will air at 1:35 a.m. and will be a half-hour program with guests, comedy sketches and segments. NBC did not announce the exact date of the debut yet.
“An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late night show? Now that is a dream come true,” Singh said in a statement, “I’m thrilled to bring it to life on NBC, and I hope my parents consider this to be as exciting as a grandchild.”
Singh first gained popularity for her videos on her YouTube channel IISuperwomanII. Over the course of eight years, Singh has amassed 14 million followers, ranked 10th on Forbes’ list of best-paid YouTube stars in 2017, and a reported $10.5 million.
On YouTube Red, Singh released her first feature film, called “A Trip to Unicorn Island,” a behind-the-scenes documentary of her tour. She also appeared in big screen films such as “Fahrenheit 451” and “Bad Moms,” and has even published a New York Times bestselling book, called “How to be a Bawse.”
