Amber Heard Supports New Bill To Help Victims
On Wednesday, Amber Heard was on Capitol Hill to support a bill that would make revenge porn a federal crime. Dozens of states, including New York, have already passed similar legislation over the past year.
Called the SHIELD Act, sponsored by Rep. John Katko (R-NY) and Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), the bill is a reintroduction of legislation that would make sharing sexually compromising images of a person without their consent punishable by a fine, up to five years in prison or both.
The bill aims to deter violators of intimate privacy, which can range from vengeful exes to online predators, who profit from and entertain themselves with the distribution of private intimate images.
“Nonconsensual porn is one of the worst violations of privacy and it doesn’t discriminate, instead it disproportionately affects women around the world with devastating consequences,” Heard said in a statement.
The “Aquaman” star went on to say, “Intimate content released into the internet is virtually impossible to remove, further subjecting victims to harassment and judgment from strangers and acquaintances alike.”
Heard is a victim of revenge porn having experienced the consequences of it in 2014 when nude photos of herself and other actresses and models were leaked online.
Heard also added that if revenge porn happened to her it can happen to anyone else.
