Ariana Grande Reportedly Sued Over ‘God Is A Woman’ Music Video

TMZ has reported that Ariana Grande has been sued for copyright infringement over the imagery in her 2018 “God Is a Woman” music video. Visual artist Vladimir Kush has reportedly claimed that Grande’s visual uses imagery similar to his own work.

Kush allegedly states in the lawsuit that the scene in which Grande is depicted dancing inside of a candle flame infringes on two paintings he made 20 years ago called “The Candle” and “The Candle 2.”

Looking back at the music video, Kush points to the 1:09 mark in which a woman’s silhouette is seen inside a flame with a bank of clouds in the background. The artist argues that the shot features undeniable similarities to his decades-old paintings.

In the lawsuit, Kush also allegedly points out that the “God Is a Woman” visual was produced by Freenjoy, Inc. — the same production company involved in producing Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” music video last year.

“All the Stars” faced a similar lawsuit in which visual artist Lina Iris Viktor claimed that her artwork was similarly infringed upon. However, that suit was eventually settled.

Kush is reportedly seeking an injunction to have the music video removed from the Internet. As of Thursday night, “God is a Woman” has reached 2 million views on YouTube.
