K-pop group gives back to Black Lives Movement
BTS stated their solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter and teamed up with their record label Big Hit Entertainment to donate $1 million to the organization. The donation was made earlier this week and confirmed by Black Lives Matter to have received the donation.
Kailee Scales, managing director for Black Lives Matter said, “Black people all over the world are in pain at this moment from the trauma of centuries of oppression. We are moved by the generosity of BTS and allies all over the world who stand in solidarity in the fight for Black lives.”
Many fans were so moved by BTS’s donation and stand against racism and police brutality that they decided to match the donation amount. In just over a day, ARMYs came up with the hashtag #MatchAMillion and hit its $1 million milestones. By Monday afternoon, ARMYs had raised just over $1.2 million.
The K-pop scene has been quite active in support of the movement. Mark Tuan of GOT7 pledged $7,000 to the George Floyd Memorial fund; Korean-American rapper pH-1 donated $3,000 to Black Lives Matter, and Jae of K DAY6 pledged a $1,000 donation to the Minnesota Freedom Fund.
Even Jay Park and his Seoul-based hip-hop label H1GHR Music collectively donated over $20,000 to Black Lives Matter.
