Bud Norris had one job on Monday.
Retire the side and win the game for the Cardinals. But the pressure seemed to be too much for the rising star, costing him the save.
The Red hosted the Cardinals on Monday, sending out Daniel Poncedeleon to pitch for his rookie debut. He had an amazing time on the mound striking two batters out in the second and retiring the side, sending his guys back out there on the field for another go at scoring some runs.
Fast forward a few innings and you’re guy Molina is up in the 6th for the Cardinals with one guy on base.
He gets a single down left field on Castillo and advances the runner all the way to home. The Cardinals are now ahead 1-0.
The game is close from beginning to end. The pitching on the mound was excellent and batters couldn’t find an angel on these guys.
But Daniel Poncedeleon was brilliant nevertheless, throwing seven no-hit innings in his major-league debut for the Cardinals.
The fans are cheering and the Reds go back out there to do what they do best, answer back with a run of their own.
2 outs and it’s Eugenio Suarez turn to bat and Bud Norris has no choice but to face him head on. Eugenio swings and tags him for a solo-home run tying the game for the Reds at 1 run a piece.
Dilson Herrera comes up to bat with a guy on base and gets a hit to left field, winning them the game over the Cardinals.
Bud Norris blew his save, and the Reds left home with a victory.
