Henry Avocado Corporation Recalls Avocados
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Henry Avocado Corporation is voluntarily recalling its California-grown whole avocados due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The company issued the recall after a routine inspection of its packing plant revealed samples that tested positive for listeria. However, the company said that avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry are not being recalled and are safe.
The recall affects those avocados packed at the Henry Avocado facility in California and then distributed in six states: Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. So far, there have been no reports of any illnesses associated with the avocados.
Henry Avocado has advised consumers to check for a “Bravocado” sticker on their avocados. Organic avocados carry a sticker that is contains the words “organic” and “California.”
Although the FDA announcement didn’t say where specifically the bacteria came from, the microbe is usually found in different places such as in dust, soil, water, and animal feces.
Listeria is a bacterium that can cause fever and diarrhea, and more dangerous complications in pregnant women. If infected, most people won’t know listeria is the culprit because there are wide variety of things that can cause symptoms, and it can take a while for symptoms to appear.
