Facebook, Instagram And Whatsapp Hit By Major Outage

Major Social Media Platforms Crash

After being out much of Wednesday, one of the longest the massively popular social network has ever experienced in its 15 years, Facebook began to come back to life early Thursday after midnight.

Facebook’s last major outage was in 2008, when the site had 150 million users rather than the 2.3 billion monthly users it has currently.

Facebook and Instagram started having problems at around noon Eastern Time, with issues popping up across Facebook proper, Facebook Messenger and Instagram around the world. Some users of WhatsApp also reported having issues sending photos on the popular messaging app.

Facebook users got an error message during the outage that said: “Sorry, Something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as fast as we can.”

Despite some early online rumors that the outages were the result of a distributed denial-of-service (DDos) attack — a type of hack in which attackers flood a company’s network — Facebook said in a tweet that “the issue is not related to a DDoS attack.”

Facebook has not confirmed the caused the outage, but NBC Bay Area anchor Raj Mathai reported late Wednesday that the issue was to do with the company’s “overloaded” databases.

With social media back up, many are breathing a sign of relief that they can finally post selfies again.
