Spider-Man’s future questioned
Fans went into shock when news came out that Spider-Man would no longer appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the Disney-Sony disagreement. There were reactions of outrage over the two studios’ fallout over the rights and profits to Spider-Man in the movies. The backlash has been affecting Sony’s profits as the company’s stock price took a dip immediately following the breaking news that the studio was breaking ties with Disney’s MCU.
Although it wasn’t a huge loss, it certainly was an economic indicator that fans are upset and not at all pleased with the schism between Sony and Marvel.
But fans are not the only disappointed; “Avengers” star Jeremy Renner has entered the Spider-Man battle and asked for the superhero to be returned to the Marvel Universe. The actor, who plays Hawkeye, said he wants to appear alongside Tom Holland’s web-slinging crusader.
“Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #please,” Renner wrote on Instagram. Stan Lee’s daughter, on the other hand, has something much different to say.
“Marvel and Disney seeking total control of my father’s creations must be checked and balanced by others who, while still seeking to profit, have genuine respect for Stan Lee and his legacy,” Joan Celia (JC) Lee said in a statement. Lee has come out siding with Sony, and even went on to say that Marvel and Disney did not reach out to her and instead “commoditized” her father’s work.
