The ABC Hit Will Continue For Two More Seasons
Prepare the popcorn because the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are returning for more shifts and more drama. ABC has renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for two more seasons, which means the series will run at least through its 17th season.
As of this year, “Grey’s Anatomy” became the longest-running medical drama, surpassing the number of episodes produced by previous record holder “ER.”
The show debuted in 2005, kicking off with Meredith Grey, a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital, who tries to set her own path in the wake of her mother, Ellis Grey, an award-winning doctor.
The series garnered a massive following not only for the romance between Meredith and resident Derek Shepherd. The TV show also for the bonds of friendship between the group of interns, and, of course, medical miracles and catastrophes executed at a rapid speed.
But the series has changed significantly over the years, with Ellen Pompeo (Meredith), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber) and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) being the only remaining actors from the original crew. Many others have come in to leave their mark before departing, including Patrick Dempsey (Derek), Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), and Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens).
In other news, ABC also renewed two other series created by Shonda Rhimes. “Station 19” – a spin-off of the “Grey’s Anatomy” universe – and “How to Get Away with Murder” will enter their third and sixth seasons, respectively.
