The Joker may be getting his own movie, but so is his first lady. Jared Leto’s take as the Clown Prince of Gotham in “Suicide Squad” was not well received, but Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn received rave reviews to the point that DC Entertainment heard the cry for a stand-alone film starring the super-villainess.
Margot first pitched the idea of a Harley Quinn spin-off film in 2015, and has spent the last few years developing a clear idea for the project.
It has been reported that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are writing said spin-off and that the film lies somewhere in between “Bad Santa” and “This Is Us.” Cathy Yan, who is best known for writing and directing her feature debut ‘Dead Pigs’, is directing the project. She is set to become the third female filmmaker to join the DC universe, while she is also the first Asian woman to direct a DC film.
Officially titled “Birds of Prey,” the Harley Quinn spin-off has been given an official release date of Feb, 7, 2020 by Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.
The “Suicide Squad” star is also set to produce the movie, which is expected to feature a villain that has never before appeared on screen. Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya will reportedly star in Harley Quinn’s girl gang, according to TheWrap.
