Harry and Meghan ditch their security detail
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will lose their Canadian security when they step back as senior members of the royal family next month, according to the country’s government. Their part-time relocation “[P]resented our government with a unique and unprecedented set of circumstances a spokesperson for the minister said in a statement.
However, Prince Harry and Meghan will still be protected by the UK police, which is taxpayer-funded, even while in Canada. The two are still recognized as Internationally Protected Persons, therefore Canada is under obligation to provide security assistance as needed.
But once Harry and Meghan begin the new chapter in their lives starting March 31, the security arrangements will end, according to the statement issued by the Canadian Office of the Minister of Public Safety.
Harry and Meghan will split their time between Canada and the UK when they complete the process of extracting themselves from the British institution.
The initial announcement of their leave sent senior royals into a series of talks. Despite the turmoil that followed, an agreement was reached specifying that Harry and Meghan would begin a 12-month transition period at the end of March where they will formally step down as senior royals and begin their new lives.
