Oh, how the tables have turned…
A hunter in Arkansas died after a deer he shot reportedly attacked him. Thomas Alexander, 66, is believed to have been killed as he was hunting in Yellville on Tuesday at about 6:30 p.m., officials said. The area is roughly 102 miles east of Fayetteville.
According to Keith Stephens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, as reported by Fox News, Alexander shot the buck using a muzzleloader, and assuming the animal was dead, “He apparently went over to the buck and it got up and attacked him.”
He managed to call his wife, who called the emergency services, and Alexander was transported to the hospital. He was supposed to be air-lifted, but Alexander stopped breathing on the way to the helicopter, so he was driven in an ambulance.
The commission has since been searching for the wounded animal.
This is not the first time an incident like this happened. Stephens told local news that about four years ago, a similar attack occurred where “somebody was struck by a buck’s antlers” — but survived. Stephens also added that hunters should wait about 30 minutes after shooting a deer before approaching it “as it may not be dead.”
