Remembering the late Bollywood actor
Celebrated Indian actor who crossed over to Hollywood from Bollywood died on Wednesday in a Mumbai Hospital. He was 53.
Khan’s death was confirmed by a spokesman. It was revealed that Khan had cancer and was admitted to the hospital for a colon infection last week.
Irrfran Khan was born Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan on Jan. 7, 1967, to two middle-class parents in Rajasthan, India.
Being one of four children, he always described his childhood as a happy one, playing cricket and going on hunting trips with his father. When his father passed away, Khan’s mother hoped her son would carry on the family business. However, Khan wanted to pursue his dreams.
The actor began his career playing small roles on Indian television in the 1980s and went on to find critical and commercial success when he landed roles in bigger films such as “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Life of Pi” and “The Namesake.” International audiences first took note of the actor with his 2001 film “The Warrior.”
Khan also appeared in other famous blockbusters such as 2015’s “Jurassic World” and 2016’s “Inferno.” In India, however, Khan is best known for his roles in “Maqbool,” “Haasil,” “Paan Singh Tomar,” “Piku,” “The Lunchbox” and “Hindi Medium.”
Upon receiving news of his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter: “Irrfan Khan’s demise is a loss to the world of cinema and theatre. He will be remembered for his versatile performances across different mediums.”
Khan is survived by his wife, Sutapa Devendra Sikdar, and two sons Babil and Ayan.
