Jim Henson is working on new ‘Lore Olympus’ animated series
If you haven’t been reading or even heard of the webtoon “Lore Olympus,” are you really up to date on pop culture?
Webtoon, a webcomic publisher and app that has more than 15 million readers a day, has partnered with The Jim Henson Company to develop Rachel Smythe’s “Lore Olympus” comic series into an animated series.
“Lore Olympus,” a stylized, contemporary reworking of Greek mythology, is currently the top title on the Webtoon app. A single episode gets more than a million hits and cosplayers across the world are dressing up as the characters from the series.
The upcoming animated series will be aimed at young adults and will be the first adaption deal for Webtoon since launching in 2014. Ashley Griffis, executive director of television for The Henson Company, will lead the development process of the webcomic.
In an interview with Deadline, Griffis said that Smythe’s take on the mythology is “innovative” and has a “unique female perspective,” which “makes this project perfect for today’s young adults.”
According to the official synopsis on Webtoon, “Lore Olympus” is about “The friendships and the lies, the gossip and the wild parties, and of course, forbidden love. Because it turns out, the gods aren’t so different from us after all, especially when it comes to their problems.”
The webcomic launched in 2018 and follows Hades and Persephone in a modernized retelling of The Taking of Persephone.
