Kanye West creates a biblical opera depicting the nativity story
Last week, Kanye West announced that he would be debuting his second opera “Mary,” in Miami during the city’s Art Basel festival. According to a press release, the original opera tells the “biblical story of the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ,” and is based on the details provided in the Books of Matthew and Luke. In other words, the opera portrayed the Nativity story where Mary miraculously became pregnant and gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem before he was welcomed by royal visitors from distant lands.
“West’s Mary brings together elements from different worlds — including opera, fine art, modern dance, and gospel music — to create a new visual interpretation and innovative performance structure,” the press release stated.
The opera was held at the Miami Marine Stadium, a once-abandoned water sports stadium that is in the process of being renovated. The opera included some performances of Sunday Service versions of “Devil In A New Dress” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.”
West appeared on the stage himself completely covered in silver, head to toe.
Later that same Sunday evening, West held a Sunday service at VOUS Church at the iTech school in Miami. Thousands of people waited for hours to attend the church service after it was announced that West would be in attendance. Due to the number of people, an overflow crowd watched the service on a big screen in the church’s courtyard.
