MCU Universe Presents First LGBTQ Character
Marvel is making strides when it comes to their Marvel Cinematic Universe. Over the years, LGBTQ comic fans have been frustrated by the lack of representation in film adaptations of their favorite comics. But in another big announcement at Comic-Con this past weekend, Marvel executives finally gave the fans what they wanted.
Actress Tessa Thompson, who made an appearance at the Marvel Panel, hinted that her character, Valkyrie, will be involved in an LGBTQ storyline in the fourth Thor movie, “Thor: Love and Thunder.” When asked what her character will be up to in the film, Thompson said: “I think first of all as king, as the new king, she needs to find her queen. That’ll be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted.”
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige later followed up with a confirmation that Valkyrie will be involved in an LGBTQ storyline. So far, Thompson portrayed Valkyrie in two Marvel films — “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
In the comics, Valkyrie has appeared since 1970, and the superheroine, based on the Norse mythological figure Brynhildr, became a central component of the superhero team known as the Defenders and a close ally and love interest of Thor. But in more recent comics, Valkyrie has been portrayed as being bisexual, to which Thompson later confirmed that for the movies, her character is bi.
