McDonald’s cashes in on the fast-food chicken sandwich trend
Step aside Popeyes and Chick-fil-A. McDonald’s has entered the chicken sandwich arena.
Trying to cash in American’s growing appetite for chicken sandwiches, McDonald’s is raising the bar by selling Chicken McGriddles and McChicken Biscuit sandwiches nationally for a limited time. The Chicken McGriddles is made with griddle cakes and a McChicken patty.
Other competitors’ breakfast chicken sandwiches include White Castle’s Chicken & Waffles Slider, Chick-fil-A’s Chicken Biscuit sandwich and Wendy’s Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit. Because franchise operators have been worried about the chain’s competitors as well as McDonald’s weak menu options.
As a result, the fast-food chain is trialing a crispy chicken sandwich and a deluxe version with tomatoes, lettuce, and mayo, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Houston, Texas.
Although McDonald’s has Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken, the chain does not “compete in the premium chicken sandwich category, either grilled or crispy,” the board of the National Owners Association, a group of McDonald’s franchisees, said.
Linda VanGosen, vice president of menu innovation at McDonald’s knows that there is a demand for more chicken and breakfast offerings, which is why McDonald’s is working hard to “satisfy both cravings,” she told CNN Business.
This move will also put McDonald’s in breakfast area a formidable competitor.
