Looking for a change of scenery

Imagine the life: a new house and a whole new life in a sun-kissed rural town in Italy – all for the mind-boggling price of one euro, or just a little over a dollar.

Seem too good to be true? Well, no need to dream anymore because Bivona, a small town deep in the heart of the southern island of Sicily is easing up on its restrictions and offering tax bonuses to anyone who wants to buy one of many empty and dilapidated properties.

The offer is part of a recent move of Italian towns that are competing to sell old houses for less than the price of a coffee. Many towns are selling properties for next to nothing because much like other towns, Bivona’s younger generation are all leaving their homes in pursuit of better, more modern opportunities in big cities. This has left the town depopulated and on the road to dying out.

Angela Cannizzaro, Bivona’s culture councilor, told CNN, “In the last 40 years, our population has halved. Today we’re down to just 3,800 residents.”

While the price of buying a home may be cheap, buyers are expected to invest in repairing and restoring the property. Moreover, Bivona’s tax incentives are only for buyers who choose to also take up residency.
