His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, will be part of the new season of “The Crown.” Netflix has released the first look at Tobias Menzies as the Duke of Edinburgh, husband and consort to the Queen in the the third and fourth seasons of the smash-hit show, taking over the role from Matt Smith.
In Netflix’s newly released photo, Menzies is in character, dressed as Prince Philip in Buckingham Palace.
Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2019, and will pick up roughly where the second season ended, covering the period of 1964 through the early 1970s. The time period will cover events such as the rise of the Beatles and England winning the soccer World Cup in 1966.
Helena Bonham Carter will take over the role of Princess Margaret, the queen’s sister, which was originally played by Vanessa Kirby in previous seasons. Other new cast members include rising British star Josh O’Connor, who will play a young Prince Charles; Marion Bailey as Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; and Ben Daniels as Antony Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret’s husband.
The second season of “The Crown” is up for 13 Emmy nominations this year, including for best drama. Foy was nominated for her critically acclaimed performance as the young Elizabeth while Kirby and Smith received nominations for their performances as Margaret and Philip, respectively.
