Extra credit is typically a blessing for slacking high school students.
But that wasn’t the case for a group of students at Encinal High School in Alameda, California.
Parents have claimed that a geometry teacher assigned an extra credit project that asked students to take selfies with sex toys and condoms they found in their parents’ bedroom drawers, CBS San Francisco reports.
Mothers Kimberly Cobene and Evangeline Garcia learned of the assignment through an after-school counselor who works with their daughters, who are both sophomores at the school.
The concerned mothers say that high school administrators are investigating the claims, but initially suggested that the assignment may have been a joke. Cobene and Garcia, however, are not so sure.
“From what I understand, a student actually did it and he used that as an example of what it should look like for the other students,” Cobene told CBS.
“If the kids took it as a joke, then why did one kid take it serious and actually did the extra credit work, and was shown as an example in class?” Garcia added.
Cobene and Garcia are hoping the teacher is fired for his actions.
Susan Davis, senior manager of community affairs at Alameda Unified School District, told Mashable that she could neither confirm nor deny the validity of the allegations against the teacher to protect both the rights of those involved and the integrity of the investigation. She added that the school district is taking the claims very seriously.
When we hear a story like this or get a report like this, we take it very, very seriously because of course we care deeply about our students. And because we take these things so seriously we’re taking the time to do a complete and in-depth investigation. We know that people are upset about this story, and we know that it’s really hard for the public, and especially for parents, to hear that we can’t talk about the details of this kind of investigation in public, but that information has to be kept confidential.
Davis added that the investigation should be wrapped up before the end of the school year in mid-June.
