Pokémon shows support for the Black community
In light of the recent protests occurring in the United States and around the world, the Pokémon Company has pledged $100,000 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The Pokémon Company posted a brief statement on its U.S. Twitter account, stating that it supports its Black employees, Black fans and families, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The company also pledged an additional $100,000 to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and in the Twitter statement, said that the company believes in “friendship, inclusivity, and equity.” “We stand in solidarity without Black employees, fans, and families who continue to be impacted by systematic racism and senseless violence,” the Pokémon Company said in its statement.
Niantic, the developer of the popular Pokémon Go mobile game, said that all of its proceeds from the upcoming Pokemon Go Fest would be donated to Black game creators and non-profit organizations. The game developer also pledged $5 million in addition to the proceeds.
The NAACP is a civil rights organization that fights to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights. In its fight against discrimination based on race, the organization works to secure political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights. The Black Lives Matter movement’s mission is to promote democracy by eradicating white supremacy and combating violence inflicted on Black communities.
